Boosting trade ties with Africa

KOCHI: Agriculture, construction, road, rail, water infrastructure pharmaceuticals, healthcare, information and communication technology are among target sectors in the ongoing ‘India-Africa Project Partnership: Showcasing Opportunities’ seminars focussing on the opportunities for India-Africa trade and business.

The seminar series is being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), and on Monday delegates from Rwanda, Ghana, Kenya, among others made presentations on the vast opportunities in the African continent for Indian entrepreneurs.

Lt. Gen. Kayumba Nyamwasa, Ambassador of Rwanda in India, spoke of the facilitating environment for investment in Africa and in Rwanda which could make Africa an economic powerhouse.

J. Bentum-Willams, High Commissioner of Ghana in India, spoke on the competitive advantage the country possessed in terms of agriculture land availability. He said that this could be utilised by outsourcing food from Africa. He also said that his country, facing shortage of houses, was interested in the taking a closer look at low-cost housing in Kerala.

Saima J. Ondimu S.S., Acting High Commissioner of Kenya in India, made a presentation on Kenya’s expanding economy and called upon the Indian business community to harness Kenya’s vast potential in the fields of eco-tourism and physical and social infrastructure.

Earlier in the day, M.S.A. Kumar, Vice-Chairman of CII (Kerala), briefed the seminar participants about the conclaves on India Africa Project Partnership organised by the CII in different parts of African countries.

Rajesh Mahna, Deputy Director, CII, made a brief overview of the various conclaves held on India-Africa project partnership. T. D. Sivakumar, Resident Representative Export-Import Bank of India, spoke on creating an environment for partnerships.
