New Delhi: A tribunal here has asked an insurer of a vehicle to pay a compensation of Rs 65 lakh to a woman who lost her job after being rendered disabled following a road accident a year ago. Motor Accident Claim Tribunal (MACT) Judge Gurdeep Singh directed the Oriental Insurance Company Limited, with which the offending vehicle was insured, to pay the compensation with 7.5 per cent interest from the date of filing the petition to the injured Usha Bhagchandani, a resident of Karol Bagh in Central Delhi, without any delay. According to the complaint, on June 20, 2006, Bhagchandani, along with her friends hired a car for Hemkund Sahib in Haridwar, but on the way, the driver lost control of the vehicle and dashed into a stationery truck. The driver and other occupants of the car including Usha sustained severe injuries. The victims were admitted to a nearby hospital from where Usha, whose condition deteriorated, was shifted to Jessa Ram Fortis hospital in Delhi, where she underwent spinal and neck surgery. But despite that she was rendered bed-ridden, the complaint said. Usha, who was earning about three lakh per annum, was subsequently terminated from her job after she was rendered disabled, it alleged. PTI
