749 degrees to be awarded on the occasion NEW DELHI: The much delayed and much awaited 35th Convocation of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Auditorium here on Tuesday. Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia will be the chief guest, while Union Health and Family Welfare Minister and AIIMS president Anbumani Ramadoss will preside. Seven hundred forty-nine degrees will be awarded on the occasion. The Convocation, which had turned into yet another tussle between Dr. Ramadoss and the AIIMS Director, Dr. P. Venugopal, was earlier scheduled to be held on September 25. However, the Minister declined to attend it stating that the date was set without his prior consent. He had also earlier refused to sign the degree certificates reportedly stating that they bore the signature of a registrar whose appointment was “illegal”. ‘At last’“After some waiting and fighting we are now looking forward to getting our degrees,” said a member of the AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association on Monday. “We have been preparing for Tuesday’s event and have conducted rehearsals to ensure a smooth run of the function.” AIIMS spokesperson Shakti Gupta said: “We are well prepared for the ceremony. Our students will be awarded their degrees and we look forward to this happy occasion.”
