KOCHI: Fisheries Minister S. Sarma has called for the formation of coastal protection committees within two weeks under the joint aegis of the Forest and Fisheries departments. Speaking at a meeting held at the Ernakulam guesthouse on Monday to evaluate the progress of the tsunami rehabilitation projects, Mr. Sarma said the government proposed to set up 864 coastal protection committees spread over nine districts under tsunami rehabilitation programme. The main objective of the committees in Ernakulam district would be to plant tree saplings along the 13.5-hectare coastal region. The Minister directed the Education Deputy Director to make recommendations after visiting all the schools in the tsunami affected regions as there were complaints regarding the maintenance of the schools and the proposals for new constructions under the tsunami rehabilitation scheme. So far, five schools, three within the limits of the district panchayat and two under Kochi Corporation, were selected under the Rs.350-lakh scheme.
