Creating a revolution with honeycomb paper
Staff Reporter
Bangalore: Can you conceive of conference tables, table tops, doors, partitions and cupboards without the use of wood?
“Honeycomb paper”, a lightweight, spongy and sturdy material made of recycled paper appears to be creating something of a revolution.
T. Subhya, whose mission it was to “replace wood with air” wherever possible, began manufacturing honeycomb paper three years ago.
He formed BRAND AID, a company that provides packaging and design solutions through this eco-friendly material — each time, custom-made to suit specific requirements.
“Industries are now manufacturing products made out of honeycomb paper because of the versatility of this paper. It can be engineered to suit any requirement, whether to replace furniture or as packaging material,” says Mr. Subhya.
Its properties are impressive: it has good thermal insulation, shock and vibration absorption properties, he says. And the product is surprisingly sturdy, thanks to the hexagonal structure of its cells — much on the lines of honeycombs, Mr. Subhya added.
“Most importantly honeycomb paper ensures that the use of wood is reduced at a time when we are facing an environmental crisis,” says Mr. Subhya who works in collaboration with NGOs.
