How many Education Ministers are there in Kerala? Just M.A. Baby, right? Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy would like to keep it that way. He is not for having ‘education ministers’ in each panchayat in the State. But, how likely is that to happen? Very likely, if the government hands over total control of all schools to local self-government institutions. Then, each panchayat will have its own ‘policy’ on education. The Opposition may differ w ith Mr. Baby’s policiesbut would rather that he be the State’s sole Minister for Education. This was how Mr. Chandy – at a seminar organised by the SCERT – argued out his opposition to the idea of handing over schools totally to LSGIs. Issues relating to infrastructure and other similar issues could well be handled by the LSGIs but the academic aspects should remain firmly with the government, he reasoned. Though there was hardly a hint of a smile on Mr. Chandy’s face when he said this and though it was difficult to discern any emotion on Mr. Baby’s face, the audience could not suppress a smile at the tongue-in-cheek manner in which he made out his case.
