Consumed by change

The Vellayambalam-Sasthamangalam road has been witnessing a lot of changes in recent times. After Kowdiar, it is this area which has become a high-development zone, with road widening works as well as a lot of construction activity. This stretch used to have a number of old, stately buildings, all constructed in the traditional Kerala style, giving the area an aristocratic feel.

But these days what sets this area apart is the number of high-rises that have come up along the entire stretch, displacing the old buildings. Except for an odd house or two, all those buildings have been pulled down. There are at least six high-rises which have already come up here, apart from a few vacant plots, where many more will soon sprout. The land value here has gone up so much that even long-time residents are only too willing to give up their plot of land and house.
