Puducherry
PUDUCHERRY: The Movement for the Welfare of Freedom Fighters of Puducherry on Monday launched an indefinite fast seeking government intervention to solve their problems. Around 50 persons participated in the fast near the Nehru Statue on the Beach Road. The most prominent among their demands was the implementation of pension scheme for freedom fighters, especially those who had sacrificed their lives during the freedom struggle. They also wanted the pension scheme extended to the family members of the freedom fighters who had lost their nationality when Puducherry was merged with India. President of the Movement D. Sivaraj said the government should observe November 1 as Independence Day of the Union Territory instead of April 16 as it had been practised. Mr. Sivaraj said it was on November 1, 1954 that the French declared Independence for the Union Territory. So, April 16 could be observed as Republic Day as it was on that day the French ratified their decision. He also wanted the government to release a documentary film on former Chief Minister Edouard Goubert.
