Monsoon woes: Boats lined up in Cuddalore. —

CUDDALORE: Fishing operation off the Cuddalore coast has suffered a setback owing to the onset of northeast monsoon.

According to M. Subramanian, a fisherman, as many as 150 mechanised boats and 300 fibre-reinforced boats in the Cuddalore Port area have been remaining idle for the past week.

Owing to strong underwater current, fishermen could not venture into the sea.

The current started much before the onset of the monsoon, he added.

It was only during the current season that the vessels were kept dormant for such a long period before the monsoon. Usually, the sea would be rough during monsoon, hampering fishing expeditions.

The Fisheries Department had cautioned people against undertaking sea voyage during the monsoon. The department was disseminating information on weather on a day-today basis.
