Kisan Sabha organises satyagraha

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kisan Sabha organised a satyagraha before the Secretariat on Tuesday demanding steps to save the coconut farmers from the crisis which was affecting them.

National president of the organisation C.K.Chandrappan, MP, who inaugurated the satyagraha, wanted the cooperative agricultural banks to procure coconuts directly from the farmers.

He was critical of the cooperative societies for shirking their primary responsibility and showing more interest in giving loans, including gold loans.

The participants raised slogans demanding permission for tapping neera and making products such as wine from it, fixing a procurement price of Rs.6 per coconut, procurement of coconuts instead of copra by the Nafed, payment of Rs.1,000 per tree for cutting down the disease affected ones and announcement of a package by the Centre for the revival of coconut cultivation in the State.
