PUDUCHERRY: The annual shopping festival is back with more attractive features, including a two-fold increase in prize money. The festival will start from November 1 and continue till January 15 next, according to organisers. Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao on Tuesday launched a poster campaign and the enrolment of shop owners to participate in the festival. The festival will see the participation of as many as 500 shops up from last year’s 358 and a total of 28, 580 prizes in various categories. M. Sivasankar, president of Puducherry Shopping Festival Association, said they would distribute 25 lakh coupons to shops, an increase of 10 lakh from last year. He saidabout 150 shops had enrolled and bought coupons on the first day . There would be gifts worth Rs. 2.5 crore, including 25 first prizes of cars, 125 second prize of mopeds and an equal number of third prizes of gold coin weighing three grams. The winners in other categories would be given home appliances, he added. The organisers said last year the combined sales figure of all the shops touched Rs 100 crore and they expect a three-fold increase this year. Mr.Rao said the government would consider the demand to increase financial support for the festival.
