THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Another green lung has been added to the city with the renovation of the traffic island park at the Poojappura junction. Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs M. Vijayakumar inaugurated the renovated park at a function on Monday.

In his inaugural address, the Minister stressed the need to maintain green spaces while beautifying the city. The renovation project was funded by the State Bank of Travancore under a sponsorship programme conceived by the Corporation.

Mayor C. Jayan Babu presided over the inaugural meeting. Thiruvananthapuram East MLA V. Sivankutty, Deputy Mayor V. Jayaprakash, SBT managing director Pradeep Shankar and chairman of the Corporation’s standing committee on Town Planning R. Sathishkumar spoke on the occasion. Ward councillor K. Maheswaran Nair, Town Planning Officer Anand Raj and Corporation Engineer K.P. Mathew were also present. The circular park has been beautified with an expansive lawn and flowering plants. Water bodies and paved walkways have been provided inside the premises. A granite water tub unearthed during excavation work at the site has been displayed on a concrete base inside the park. The project was taken up as part of a sponsorship programme to beautify the parks and traffic islands in the city. While the public parks at Kowdiar, Poonthura and Sreekanteswaram have already been renovated and thrown open to the public, the beautification of the Sri Chithira Tirunal Ppark in the Fort area and the Golf Links island park is expected to be completed soon.
