HYDERABAD: Farmers’ wings of different political parties have criticised the Andhra Pradesh government for trying to skirt responsibility in enhancing the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy on a par with wheat. Participating in a meeting convened by the CPI-affiliated Andhra Pradesh Ryotu Sangham here on Tuesday, the representatives of the Telugu Rythu, CPI (M)-affiliated Rythu Sangham, Bharatiya Janata Kisan Morcha and TRS farmers’ unit demanded that the Government announce remunerative prices for paddy over and above the MSP announced by the Centre. The farmers’ organisations have decided to conduct rasta rokos and rail rokos across the State on Wednesday in support of their demand. Speaking to reporters, Ryotu Sangham representative K. Ramakrishna and others said the protest would be conducted from 10.30 am to 12 noon across the State while the leaders of the associations would stage rail roko at Secunderabad in the morning. They criticised the Centre for not increasing the MSP for paddy to Rs. 1,000 despite representations made by MPs and Union Ministers from the State. The Congress’ official spokespersons in New Delhi were, in fact, opposing the hike that would benefit over 20 lakh families dependent on paddy cultivation in the State. CM should lead teamThe representatives wanted Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to lead a delegation of political parties and farmers’ bodies to New Delhi to impress upon the Centre the need to enhance the MSP.
