It is time to remember the unfulfilled promises

Kittur (Belgaum District): Even as Kittur started celebrating Kittur Utsav or the Vijayotsav on Tuesday to mark the victory of Rani Channamma over the British in 1824, the people will also remember the promises made by the Government to bestow taluk status on their town.

The townspeople have been demanding the taluk tag for Kittur for several years now. Since the Government started celebrating Kittur Utsav, there has been no occasion when a visiting Minister has not supported the demand or promised to fulfil it.

Such promises have also served the purpose of the gallery and earned them some public applause.

The last promise was made by the former Revenue Minister, Jagadish Shettar.

A year ago, Mr. Shettar said that the Government would accord taluk status to Kittur soon after completion of the constituency delimitation exercise in the State.

Though the delimitation exercise was completed well before the 20-month term of the Janata Dal (S)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition Government ended, no attempt was made to implement the promise.

He had said that the Government had considered the demand of the people to accord taluk status to Kittur but could not announce it owing to the delimitation exercise. There would not be any delay in taking a decision to announce the taluk tag soon after the delimitation exercise, he had promised.

Interestingly, Mr. Shettar is not the only one to have made the promise. The former minister for Agriculture Marketing, Prakash B. Hukkeri (Congress), too made the promise when the Congress-Janata Dal (S) Government was in power in 2004 only to repeat it in 2005.
