CPI(M): no food riots in West Bengal

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday said there were no food riots in West Bengal as alleged by the Congress. It said the Congress spokesperson’s statement on the issue was “intemperate as it is ill-informed.”

“There are no food riots in West Bengal although some elements, who want a ‘mahajot,’ are doing everything possible to incite violence on the issue of ration distribution so as to disrupt the entire system,” the party’s Polit Bureau said in a statement.

While maintaining that the West Bengal government had taken stringent measures to end corruption in the system, the party said the major problem was the huge cuts in allocations to the Above Poverty Line sections by the Central government, bringing it down to just over 3 per cent of the initial allocation.
