NEW DELHI: The Indian arm of world’s largest carmaker General Motors Corp, GM India, is assessing possibilities to establish a powertrain (engine manufacturing) unit in the country to service both the domestic and export markets. The company also plans to launch a new sports vehicle in India. Interacting with media persons here on Tuesday, GM India’s newly appointed President and Managing Director, Karl Slym, said “We have not finalised the timing of the plant but are definitely planning to bring powertrain to India. The details of the plant would be announced in the near future. Captiva will be the new sports utility vehicle that will be launched during the upcoming Auto Expo in January next year. “The Captiva would be brought into India as a completely built unit (CBU). We will study the market with the product first before taking a call on whether to assemble the car here or not,” he said. GM India, which is in talks with some State governments for a site for its global engine plant, is now sourcing engines for its products from its other global plants. Apart from multi-utility vehicle Tavera, which is 97 per cent localised, the company’s other products run on sourced engines. Although a final decision is yet to be made on its location, GM India Director and Vice-President, P. Balendran, indicated that the plant was likely to come up in Maharashtra where the company was setting up its second vehicle manufacturing unit in India. The company at present operates out of a manufacturing facility in Halol, Gujarat, with a capacity to produce 85,000 units annually. The new plant would have an initial capacity to produce 1.45 lakh units annually. The company proposes to roll out a new mini car from Talegaon. “Apart from Captiva we will also launch a small car in India by the end of the next calendar year,” Mr. Balendran said.
