BERHAMPUR: The BJP wants to make its presence felt in Ganjam district reviving the old demand to link the Mahanadi river with the Rushikulya river. Former deputy speaker of the Assembly Ram Chandra Panda who has returned to the BJP after his stint in the Bharatiya Janshakti Party and the BJP Krushak Morcha have taken out this old issue out of the basket. The BJP Krushak Morcha has declared that it would start a ’Rushikulya Bachao Andolan’ in Ganjam and Gajapati districts to press the State Government. They are going to hold a demonstration at Chatrapur on Nov 3. Rushikulya is the major river of these two districts. But it is not perennial. Barring the rainy season the river remains almost dry. The BJP leaders demand that it be linked to the Mahanadi through a canal system for recharging Rushikulya and to reduce floods in the Mahanadi. It is felt that recharging of Rushikulya would enhance irrigation facility in these two districts.
