The objective is to develop attractive literature in the regional language 70 participants attending the convention BHUBANESWAR: With participants from all over the State and guest writers from West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, a three-day children’s writers’ convention kicked off at Puri on Tuesday. Being hosted by the ’Orissa Sishu Sahitya Gabeshana Parishad’ in association with the Sreekeshetra Sishu Sahitya Sansad of Puri, it was collectively inaugurated by former Union Minister and parliamentarian from Puri Braja Kishore Tripathy, local civic chief Gourahari Pradhan and former municipality chairperson Surendra Nath Das. Several sessionsParishad founder and noted children’s writer Manindra Mohanty said the objective of organising such conventions and workshops was to develop attractive literature and textbooks for the juvenile in the regional language that has been facing a serious threat from invasion of English as medium of education for children. The three-day meet would have several sessions devoted to discussions on child psychology, editing children’s writings, translation for children, science writing for the young, illustrations for children’s books, biographies for kids, printing technology and programmes for children on AIR and Doordarshan, the hosts elaborated. Each of the deliberations shall be followed by interactive question-answer sessions, it was learnt. An exhibition of books for children has been mounted at the venue where representatives of educational and cultural organisations can buy books at concessional rates, they said. Two persons shall be honoured on the concluding day for their pioneering contribution to children’s literature, Dr.Mohanty said. Nearly 70 participants including writers, researchers, editors and compilers of children’s literature are participating in this 15th edition of the Parishad’s convention of its kind.
