READY FOR A CAMPAIGN: Members of AIDWA, SFI and DYFI staging a protest at Bangalore’s Town Hall on Tuesday against Datta Jayanti celebrations at Datta Peeta, Bababudangiri in Chikmagalur district.

BANGALORE: Demanding that the Datta Jayanthi and Datta Mala programmes at Bababudanagiri shrine should not be allowed, the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), and the Students Federation of India staged a demonstration here on Tuesday.

The Supreme Court judgment on maintaining the status quo at Bababudanagiri shrine must be implemented, said K.S. Lakshmi, state general secretary of AIDWA. The judgment had said that only rituals performed prior to 1975 should be allowed at the shrine.

Ms. Lakshmi said the Bharatiya Janata Party and Sangh Parivar organisations performed idol worship and conducted Shoba Yatra during Datta Jayanti celebrations, in violation of the Supreme Court judgment.

All efforts must be made to maintain the Hindu-Muslim amity in the area, she said.

In a press release, the organisations alleged that the communalisation of the issue by BJP and the Sangh Parivar organisations had hurt the secular image of the State. Severe action must be taken against these organisations which had been trying to promote Datta Jayanthi celebrations, the release said.

The AIDWA, DYFI and SFI would submit a memorandum in this regard to Governor Rameshwar Thakur, urging him to look into the issue.
