TIRUCHI: Permanent Electors Photo Identity Card (EPIC) centres in all 234 Assembly constituencies will start functioning by December, Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta said on Tuesday.
The equipment for the centres was being procured through the Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT). Tenders had been called for a State-level agency which could assist the Election Department in information technology administration and management, Mr. Gupta told reporters after chairing a meeting here with the Collectors of Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Sivagangai and Krishnagiri to discuss the summary revision of electoral rolls and review the work on preparation of photo electoral rolls.
Once the centres became operational, he said, the issue of cards and making corrections would become easier. Voters who had not been issued the cards so far would get the new cards, which would be smaller in size and include their dates of birth.
The summary revision of the electoral rolls, with January 1, 2008 as the qualifying date, would begin by the first week of November and would be completed by the first week of January.
The draft rolls will be published on November 5.
Mr. Gupta said Dindigul, Namakkal and Karur districts had achieved cent per cent coverage in preparation of photo electoral rolls. The State average was 95 per cent.
