IN CUSTODY: Jyoti alias Malati, who was missing after a mob beat her up at Edappal, near Malappuram recently, in police custody on Tuesday. MALAPPURAM: After a search that lasted for weeks, the police on Tuesday took into custody the two women who had been beaten up by a mob at Edappal. The incident had sparked widespread anger, with the State Human Rights Commission seeking an explanation from the senior police officers here. Two police head constables had been suspended in the wake of the incident. The police rounded up Jyoti alias Malati, 40, her three-year-old son Nitya, and sister Kavita, 25, in a dramatic style from a bus at Kottakkal. The women had reportedly boarded the Kozhikode-bound bus from Kottakkal. The police action followed a tip-off by an autorickshaw driver. The police subjected the women to a medical examination. After prolonged tests, it was confirmed that the women were not pregnant. Media reports had said that one of the women had been pregnant when they were beaten up by the mob on charges of theft. The women were missing after the incident, and the police had launched a hunt for them.
