HYDERABAD: Six months into the job, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner and Special Officer C.V.S.K. Sarma’s iron fist behind the soft velvet glove is beginning to show. After having set the rules of the game and read out the riot act to his engineering wing, Dr. Sarma has set himself six months to show results on ground. Ever since he has taken charge and began his inspections, he has been liberally sanctioning projects all over the capital region or “wherever there was a need”, as he puts it. These works include roads, community halls, walls around 1,500 open spaces, parks, water lines, nala improvements, reservoirs, sewerage lines, etc., -- all estimated to cost up to Rs. 1,000 crore! “From next week I will be going around and checking to ensure that all the works are grounded so that by March there is something to show. A lot of works pertaining to interior roads, colonies and slums have been cleared and I will ensure they all take off,” he says. Not even the fact that he is working with the one-third staff capacity appears to faze him. “If we put proper systems in place I don’t see any reason why things can’t be worked out,” he says. About Rs. 40 crore was sanctioned to the Water Board to take up various works pertaining to drinking water supply and drainage. Wherever possible, ‘model’ roads with a common duct laid underneath for all cables would be laid.
