EVOLVING STRATEGY: Samajwadi Party general secretary Amar Singh (left), Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu (second from right) and Yerran Naidu of the TDP (right) after a meeting between United National Progressive Alliance leaders and Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat at Mr. Singh’s residence in New Delhi on Tuesday. — NEW DELHI: The United National Progressive Alliance (UNPA) and the Left parties will adopt a common approach in Parliament to the nuclear deal with the United States. An understanding to this effect was worked out on Tuesday at a meeting between some senior UNPA leaders and Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat. The UNPA leaders did not come out with details of the meeting held at Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh’s house here but Mr. Karat told The Hindu that “the UNPA agreed to have a common approach with the Left on the nuclear deal.” At the meeting — attended by SP president Mulayam Singh, Telugu Desam Party president N. Chandrababu Naidu, TDP leader K. Yerran Naidu and Mr. Amar Singh — Mr. Karat detailed the discussions the Left had held with the UPA on the nuclear deal. With speculation rife of a possible special session of Parliament to discuss the nuclear deal, floor coordination was also discussed. Asked whether they discussed the possibility of an electoral understanding with Mr. Karat in the eventuality of a snap poll, the UNPA leaders did not respond. Mr. Yerran Naidu said it was a routine meeting. “Every time Mr. Chandrababu Naidu is in the Capital, he meets Mr. Karat and the Samajwadi Party leadership.” Describing the CPI(M) and Samajwadi Party as “natural allies,” Mr. Amar Singh said there was nothing new in the meeting.
