Relevance of Rumi’s philosophy in globalised world underscored

Birth anniversary of Sufi poet Mevlana Jalal Ud-Din Rumi celebrated
HYDERABAD: Noted American scholar of Rumi philosophy and Sufism Nevit Ergin on Tuesday said that the relevance of Rumi poetry is greatly felt in the present day’s globalised world scenario ruled by technology and materialism. Drawing attention to ‘contradictions between reason and faith engulfing the present day world’, he noted that oneness of god and unity of mankind stood out as central tenets of Rumi’s philosophy.
Delivering a lecture on “Rumi’s work and its contemporary relevance” organised jointly by the Osmania University’s Department of Islamic Studies and the U.S. Consulate in Chennai to mark the 800th birth anniversary celebrations of 13th century Sufi poet Mevlana Jalal Ud-Din Rumi of Turkey, Dr. Ergin brought home the importance of Rumi as a great mystic and humanist transcending boundaries.
Vice-Chancellor of the university Mohammed Suleman Siddiqi spoke on Rumi’s times that shaped his world view and profound wisdom.
