Karunanidhi fiat to identify, demolish unstable buildings

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has instructed the Tamil Nadu Housing Board and the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board to identify structurally unstable buildings across the State, demolish these and rebuild new structures in their place.

A review of the Housing Board and the Slum Clearance Board chaired by Mr. Karunaidhi decided to set up committees headed by the Collector and comprising officials of the Slum Clearance Board, the Housing Board and building experts in each district.

The committee will examine all structures of the Slum Clearance Board and the Housing Board and draw up a list of unstable structures in a month.

People living in these buildings will be requested to move out to enable their demolition. They would be given Rs.8,000 for relocation and a photo identity card for each member of the family. The new buildings will be constructed in a year and allotted to the original residents.

Housing Minister I.Periasamy, Chief Secretary L.K.Tripathy, Finance Secretary K.Gnanadesikan and officials from the Housing Board and Slum Clearance Board attended the meeting.
