Jayalalithaa moves court seeking “full protection”

Special Correspondent

She has sought a directive to the State Government

No records to prove that key security measures have been provided: Jayalalithaa

“Not enough protection despite repeated threats to my life”

Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has moved the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the State Government to provide her “full protection” she is entitled to under Z Plus security category.

Justice K. Suguna allowed the filing of the petition, after a mention was made before her by counsel for Ms. Jayalalithaa. Referring to the October 16 incident, when a stranger entered her residence, Ms. Jayalalithaa said despite repeated threats to her life, the State Government had not given even minimum protection to her.

Security measures sought

“It is the constitutional duty of the State Government to protect persons like me, who have been placed in the Z Plus security category,” she said.

The court must direct the Government to provide security measures such as anti-sabotage squad, door frame metal detector, bullet-proof vehicle, ambulance, jammer vehicles, police drivers, close circuit television, walkie-talkie sets and search lights.

Taking exception to the lack of response even after the latest incident, Ms. Jayalalithaa said these measures were part of the security provided to the protectees. The officials concerned could not even furnish records to prove that they had provided these facilities to her.

“Providing security to a person in the Z Plus category is not the will and pleasure of the State Government, but it is its constitutional duty,” she said, adding the State Government must ensure such force, arms and equipment as may be required by law.

“False claim”

Citing the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, Director-General of Police, Commissioner of Police and the Chief Minister as respondents, she said the “negligent attitude” of the officials was “either of their own accord or at the instance of the Chief Minister.” Though her security was reduced almost to the zero level, a “false claim” was made in the Assembly as if enough security had been provided to her, Ms. Jayalalithaa complained.
