Andhra Pradesh leaders meet Sonia, Pawar

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: United Progressive Alliance Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday assured a delegation of Ministers and MPs from Andhra Pradesh led by Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy that their demands on raising the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy and groundnut for the current procurement season and on reversing the decision to ban export of non-Basmati rice would be looked into.

Earlier, the delegation met Union Agriculture and Food Minister Sharad Pawar and sought at least Rs. 900 a quintal MSP for paddy meant for the Public Distribution System. They also sought a MSP of Rs. 2,500 from the current level of Rs. 1,150 a quintal.

It urged the Minister to lift the ban on export of non-Basmati rice. If not, it wanted the millers to be allowed to honour their export commitments undertaken between October 9—when the Cabinet banned the export —and October 15—when the decision was notified.
