Firemen rescue cat

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: It took personnel of the Howrah fire brigade three-and-a-half hours to get a cat, found moving up and down the ledge of the fifth floor of the local general post office, to leap to safety into a net laid out for it.

The net was used after every other conceivable means to rescue it, including the bait of food, failed on Tuesday.

The fire brigade was informed about a cat trapped on the ledge and on reaching the spot the firemen climbed up the ladder attached to a fire tender to reach the ledge.

But the cat refused to be lured.

Watched by a large crowd of on-lookers that had gathered below, the firemen eventually managed to get the cat to leap into the safety net. The rescue operation, that started at 11.50 a.m., ended at 3.20 p.m., a fire official told The Hindu.
