RESOLVING CRISIS: United Nations Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari calling on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to discuss the Myanmar issue in New Delhi on Tuesday. New Delhi: Seeking concrete action for bringing about democracy in Myanmar, U.N. special envoy Ibrahim Gambari on Tuesday asked India to act in this direction. Mr. Gambari, who met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh earlier in the day, said he had conveyed a message from U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon with regard to an early solution to the problem in Myanmar. “Theoretically, all of us can do more,” he told reporters here, when asked about his expectations from India in resolving the crisis. Common objectiveHe said he expected India to continue to encourage the authorities in Yangon to work with the United Nations to achieve the common objective of a peaceful, stable and prosperous Myanmar that embarks on a national reconciliation process. “Very satisfied”Mr. Gambari said he was “very satisfied” with India’s response and stressed the need for “qualitative results” for an accelerated democratisation process. “The fact that I was received at the highest level shows that the Government of India is committed to working with the U.N. Secretary General,” he said. Refusing to set any deadline for the process of democratisation, he said he hoped it would happen “sooner than later.” — PTI Hails visitNew Delhi Special Correspondent writes: Burma Solidarity, an open platform of activists, academicians, students, teachers, politicians and NGOs, has welcomed the visit of Mr. Gambari to India and his meeting with Dr. Singh. Burma Solidarity expressed the hope that Mr. Gambari’s meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and top brass of the Ministry of External Affairs would lead to India joining the rest of the international community in demanding an immediate halt to the violence in Myanmar. It also hoped that New Delhi would stop sale and supply of military hardware to the junta, cease all investment in that country and demand the release of Aung San Suu Kyi.
