148-member Indian team for Asian Indoor Games

Renjith Maheswary and Sinimole Paulose to spearhead campaign in athletics


NEW DELHI: India will field a 148-member contingent in the second Asian Indoor Games to be held in Macau from October 26 to November 3.

The bulk of the contingent left here on Tuesday for Mumbai en route to Macau. The athletics team is expected to leave from Kolkata after the National in Jamshedpur. The athletics events start on October 30.

The swimming team left Bangalore on Tuesday. India will be participating in 13 of the 15 sports disciplines. Asian champions triple jumper Renjith Maheswary and women’s metric miler Sinimole Paulose will spearhead the Indian campaign in athletics competitions.

The Government has cleared 97 of the 118 sportspersons for the Macau Games. The disciplines approved are athletics, tenpin bowling, chess, kabaddi, muay, swimming, hoop, sepak takraw (women) and hockey (men).

Those not cleared by the Government are, aerobic gymnastics, dance sport, e-sport and sports climbing. The IOA will bear its own cost for sending teams in disciplines not approved by the Government.

The president of the Madhya Pradesh Olympic Association, Mahesh Joshi, has been nominated as the Chef de Mission of the contingent.

Bineesh, Gurvinder Pal Singh, Robin Rosemani, Hari Sankar Roy, Renjith Maheswary, Bibu Mathew, Saurabh Vij, P. J. Vinod, Ram Niwas. Women: M. R. Poovamma, Sinimole Paulose, Preeja Sredharan, Sini Jose, Anu Maria Jose, A. Vijila, Debashree Mazumdar, Shriya Vidwans.

Chess: Men: K. Sasikiran, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Deepan Chakkravarthy, Arun Prasad Subramanian. Women: Koneru Humpy, D. Harika, Tania Sachdev, Meenakshi Subbaraman.
