Murali shines in Vijaya Bank triumph

MUMBAI: Powered by another outstanding show from Murali Mohan (15 points), Vijaya Bank’s aggressive and decisive play in offence and defence enabled the Bangalore team overpower Western Railway, Ratlam 91-63 in the men’s final of the 24th United Phosphorous all-India Ramu Memorial basketball tournament here on Tuesday.

Mohan scored the first 12 points as the bank side from Bangalore rattled rivals with pace, the defence chipped in with blocks and steals to turn the pressure on Western. Vijaya Bank’s offence delivered, with three-pointers from diverse angles. Yadwinder Singh (16) tried hard for Western Railway, but could not stem the tide. Srinivas Nayak from the champion team was named the men’s Player of the Tournament while Anju Lakra of South East Central Railway won the women’s award.

The results: Men: Final: Vijaya Bank 91 (Murali Mohan 15, Srinivas Nayak 12, Sanjay Raj 12) bt Western Railway 63 (Jasjot Singh 27, Yadwinder Singh 16). — Special Correspondent
