Newcastle defeats Tottenham

LONDON: Newcastle United beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 on Monday to keep Spurs in the relegation zone of the English Premier League. Obafemi Martins and Claudio Cacapa put the home side 2-0 ahead and, although Robbie Keane scored for Tottenham, substitute James Milner completed an easy win for the Magpies.

Newcastle remained eighth in the Premier League with 17 points, 10 more than Tottenham, which stayed in 18th — above only Bolton and Derby.

Tottenham goalkeeper Radek Cerny replaced the injured Paul Robinson and stopped Newcastle from taking a 27th-minute lead when he stopped a right-foot shot by Michael Owen. He also thwarted an effort by Martins, while Abdoulaye Faye headed against the post. — AP
