Hockey
Chennai: The first phase of the German hockey league, involving a contingent of Indian players, has concluded. It was drag-flicker Sandeep Singh who impressed a lot. Sandeep’s team, TG Frankenthal won 2-0 against newcomer Nuernberger HTC. The win not only confirmed it a fourth place in the table, but also earned a spot for the play-off leg. With two matches to go, Frankenthal only needs one win to finish in the top four. Stuttgarter Kickers, featuring Deepak Thakur and Vinaya Swami, drew 1-1 against Duesseldorf. The extra point for the win in the penalty stroke competition enabled it to take another step towards the play-offs. It is now in the seventh place. Gladbacher HTC, for which Shivendra and Vikram Pillay figured, had a poor season, losing all nine matches, including the one last Saturday 3-4 against Sw Neuss, for which Tushar Khandekar turned up this season. In the second division it was a good weekend for Probhodh Tirkey and Vivek Gupta. Their Club Raffelberg won 7-3 against Leverkusen, which was good enough to earn a third place in the table. One spot higher is Rheydter SV, with Prabjot Singh and Sardar Singh. It won 3-2 in Hamburg against Großflottbek (demoted from first league). And on Sunday Rheydt won 9-3 in Marienthal (two goals by Prabjot, three by Sardar). Now Rheydt is only two points behind the favourite Red and White Cologne for whom the Zeller brothers, Weissenborn and Wess are the key players. In the second southern division Muenchner SC won 4-3 against Heidelberg (one goal from Halappa). But on Sunday it lost 1-4 to league favourite Mannheimer HC.
