Thiruvananthapuram: The police have arrested five persons, including a former nun, on the charge of running a sex-for-money racket centred on a Social Welfare Department authorised private home for the destitute at Kadhinamkulam. Circle Inspector (Kazhakuttom) A. Pramod Kumar identified the suspects as Gladys, 65, Latha, 38, Shyam Kumar, 23, Alan, 22, and Tarun, 14. The police raided the institution late on Monday night following an intelligence tip-off. The Circle Inspector said the police recovered a large number of contraceptives, porn magazines, two air guns and hockey sticks from the destitute home. He said there were 54 inmates at the home. The police sealed the institution on the orders of the local magistrate. The inmates had been shifted to other institutions. He said the hockey sticks were used by the “untrained” wardens of the home for administering corporal punishment on “noisy” inmates. He said the air guns were used for threatening the mentally ill patients admitted there. The police requested the government to cancel the institution’s authorisation. The official said the management did not maintain proper records at the home. The real identity and address of some of the inmates were yet to be ascertained. The CI said Gladys, the prime suspect, worked as the headmistress of a lower primary school at Amboori. The suspects would be produced before the court on the charge of violating the Immoral Traffic Prevention Act on Wednesday.
