Mumbai suburban train network to be revamped

Phase-I to provide 550 new trains

To ease congestion at booking counters


NEW DELHI: In order to rationalise operations and bring down decongestion, the Indian Railways in collaboration with Maharashtra government has drawn up a major plan to revamp the Mumbai Suburban Railway System through implementation of rail component of multi-modal Mumbai Urban Transport Project. According to an official statement on Tuesday, the main objective behind this new plan is to bring down the over crowding during peak hour peak direction and segregate the suburban train operation from the main line passenger and freight services.

The MUTP Phase-I was sanctioned at a cost of Rs. 3,125.20 crore and is aimed at providing benefits like addition of 550 new trains — 25 per cent increase in total trains per day.

On the fast lines, all trains will be of 12-cars.

On slow lines, 20 per cent of trains will be of 12-cars. Vehicle km per day would stand increased by 33 per cent.

Over crowding during peak hour peak direction will come down from existing over 5,000 commuters to 3,600 per 9-car rake.
