PUDUCHERRY: Secretary of the Puducherry unit of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam A.Anbalagan on Tuesday flayed the government for “extending support to the traders” for holding the shopping festival on the ground that it would not benefit the consumers. He told reporters here that the government should ask the traders to extend rebate on the products sold during the festival instead of issuing coupons to the consumers. Recalling that there had been allegations with regard to the system adopted by the organisers of the festival in choosing the prize winners through lots, Mr.Anbalagan said distribution of coupons to the consumers amounted to “encouraging gambling.” He accused the government of “not taking any initiative” to ensure a coordinated action by the departments of public works, health and local administration to take precautionary measures in the low-lying areas in different Assembly segments to ensure that water logging did not result in spread of diseases. Several local bodies in the Union Territory were plagued by intra rivalry in the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, he said, adding that this had come in the way of attending to public grievances.
