CHANDIGARH: The Hague-based Altus Global Alliance has launched the second edition of its Police Station Visitors’ Week being organised internationally from October 22 to 28 this year. The Union Territory of Chandigarh and five States from India have been included in the exercise being conducted across 19 other countries. According to a release here, the Week is being observed with active involvement of civil society in partnership with the police in countries that include India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the U.S., Russia, Albania, Benin, Brazil, Bulgaria, Chile, Ghana, Latvia, Liberia, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Peru, South Africa and South Korea. The South-East Asia region’s week is being co-ordinated by the Chandigarh-based Institute for Development and Communication (IDC). Altus Global Alliance chairman Chris Stone described the Week as an opportunity for the public to assess and become acquainted with service delivery in police stations. In turn, the police would benefit from the public visits as they seek ways to further improve their service. Altus Global Alliance director Pramod Kumar said it was a crucial step forward towards police reforms that are taking place across the globe from India to Mexico to South Africa to South Korea. However, police stations despite being the nerve centres and first points of contact with the people have not been at the centre of these reforms. Dr. Kumar said the purpose of these visits was to encourage the public to build its stakes in police stations and harmonise the police stations’ existence with other service delivery organisations.
