This Day That Age
Western delegates at the United Nations on October 23 advanced the idea of sending the Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, to investigate the Syrian-Turkish dispute on the spot. The United States was understood to have discussed the move in private talks with other delegations, including the Arabs. Britain was said to be supporting the U.S. move which may open the way for a compromise. There was no immediate word of what they discussed but informed sources said the meetings concerned the Syrian-Turkish dispute and a possible role by the Secretary-General. Mr. Hammarskjoeld was thought to be ready to go to the area if the Assembly directed him.
