Corrections and clarifications

* A cricket report “Disciplined Pakistan downs South Africa” (“Sport”, October 24, 2007) said that Younis Khan was caught behind by Mark Boucher. Younis was caught by Johan Botha. (The report was on the third day-night ODI at Faisalabad between South Africa and Pakistan.)

* Amol Shinde was dismissed for 98, as mentioned in the scoreboard, and not for 94 as a cricket report “Atchuta scalps five for Andhra” (“Sport”, October 24, 2007) said. (The report was on the South Zone under-22 C.K. Nayudu Trophy tournament at Visakhapatnam.)

* A report “Open Nationals from today” (“Sport”, October 23, 2007) said that Seema Antil, national record holder, and Krishna Poonia, bronze medal winner at the Doha Games, would give it their best try in shot put. It should have been discus. The error was corrected in the later editions.

* A report “EC orders transfer of 8 Gujarat officers” (October 16, 2007) mentioned “S.K. Gadhavi, Superintendent of Police, Tapi district” as among officials ordered to be transferred by the Election Commission. These officers held key posts during the post-Godhra riots. A reader says that Tapi is not a district of Gujarat and maybe a “police district” for administrative purposes. Also, the SP’s name should be “S.K. Gadhvi”, and not “S.K. Gadhavi”. The Special Correspondent clarifies that the name Tapi district and Gadhavi were mentioned by the Election Commission in its press release. However, the inference that this police officer held the post during the riots is incorrect. The release mentioned that he is being transferred from Tapi district. Our Gujarat Correspondent clarifies that Tapi district was formed on October 2, 2007, after the bifurcation of Surat district. S.K. Gadhavi was the SP, Surat district.
