Traditional: An Ilkal sari. Bangalore: The Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (KHDC) is planning a special Ugadi gift for connoisseurs of handloom weaves. It is bringing to the market the famed Ilkal saris, in pure silk by March as part of its “Heritage Saris” collection. Molakalmur saris, yet another distinct weaving tradition of north Karnataka, will also be marketed with a refurbished look. They will be priced from Rs. 2,000 onwards. GI tagThe corporation is hoping to get Geographical Indication (GI) tag for these heritage saris, which have a history dating back to centuries. The tag will ensure proprietor rights to traditional weavers on use of the brand name and improve the product’s marketing potential, said KHDC Managing Director S.N. Jayaram at a press conference. The saris will be in a blend of eco-friendly colours. Ilkal and Molakalmur saris come in striking colours such as pomegranate red, brilliant peacock green and parrot green. Traditional designsThe corporation was investing in research and development and had collected 40 traditional designs to experiment with. This, Mr. Jayaram said, would take the saris beyond their traditional markets in north Karnataka and Maharashtra. “Heritage saris will click. That is the hope of Priyadarshini,” he added.
