“Take steps to maintain peace in the area”

Plea to arrest those responsible for attack

CHENNAI: Leaders of various political parties have condemned the damage caused to Ambedkar statue in Madurai on Tuesday.

Secretary of the All India Congress Committee K. Jayakkumar regretted that it was not uncommon in Tamil Nadu to damage statues of Ambedkar. Those who committed the crime had done it with the intention of creating confusion and conflict among people. Persons responsible for such nefarious activities should be arrested immediately.

“Barbaric”

General secretary of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Vaiko described the incident as “barbaric,” and said the Government should take steps to arrest those involved.

State secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) N. Varadarajan wanted the Government to take steps to maintain peace in the area.

“Recurring practice”

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi general secretary Thol .Tirumavalavan said it had become a recurring practice in southern parts of the State to discredit Dr. Ambedkar. He alleged it was a planned attempt by some people who wanted to instigate communal trouble.

The Government should identify and bring them to book. He demanded sufficient protection for Ambedkar statues.

President of the All India Ambedkar People’s Party Vai. Balasundaram urged the Government to take steps to arrest the culprits.
