Steps to be recommended to check sand-mining Lake faces threats from several quarters THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The legislative committee on environment will submit recommendations for the protection of the Vellayani freshwater lake in Thiruvananthapuram, committee chairman Rajaji Mathew said here on Wednesday. Speaking after a visit to the areas adjoining the lake on Wednesday, Mr. Mathew said the recommendations would be submitted in the next session of the Assembly in February. He said the lake faced threats from several quarters. “It requires a coordinated effort on the part of several departments to address the problems. The report will contain recommendations for urgent steps to remove encroachments and check illegal sand-mining from the lake.” Mr. Mathew said the committee was evolving a mechanism to preserve the lake and its environment. Earlier, the committee, comprising V. Surendran Pillai and Yusuf, held a meeting at the College of Agriculture, Vellayani, and received petitions from the public. Revenue Divisional Officer S. Bahuleyan, Thiruvananthapuram Tahsildar Krishnakumar and officials from the Kerala Agricultural University and government departments participated in the meeting.
