KOCHI: Seven months have passed since the government decided to register elephants in each district before the district magistrate. Yet, no efforts have been made in Kochi to implement the decision, which was taken at the highest level. It was on April, 11, 2007, that the decision to register the animals before the District Collector was taken at a joint meeting attended by Forest Minister Benoy Viswom, Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran and Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan. Senior officials of the Forest Department were also present at the meeting. Meeting convenedThe government had convened the meeting in the wake of a several incidents of elephants running amok and causing death and destruction of property. The decision has failed to make any impression in the district. All that was done in Kochi regarding the registration was the micro-chipping of elephants, say Forest officials. However, the micro-chipping was launched much before the government decision to register the animals. It was also decided at the meeting to complete the micro-chipping of animals. In separate programmes, nearly 40 animals have been micro-chipped in Kochi, said E.K. Eswaran, veterinary surgeon of the Forest Department, who is leading the team of experts in micro-chipping the elephants.
