THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Two Wheelers Association has appealed to the Government to stop the harassment of motorists by the police in the name of enforcing the use of helmets. A pressnote issued by the association here on Wednesday said the Government could enact legislation to exempt two-wheeler drivers from the helmet rule as for pillion riders. It observed that the bad condition of the roads was the primary reason for accidents involving two wheelers. “Despite directives from the High Court, the Government has done little to improve the road conditions in the State. Two-wheeler riders are more prone to accidents caused by potholes. As many as 16 people lost their lives in the months of June and July when the enforcement of the helmet rule was at its peak”, the association said. Pointing out that helmets of ISI specifications were in short supply in the State, the pressnote blamed the Government for the failure to ensure adequate supply of quality helmets through fair price shops. It called on the Government to relax the enforcement of the helmet rule till the roads were restored to motorable condition.
