ITBP celebrates Raising Day

NEW DELHI: Acknowledging that he was aware of the problems faced by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil has said special efforts were being made for construction of family quarters for them. Speaking at the 46th ITBP Raising Day celebrations here, Mr. Patil announced a special ration for the soldiers deployed at and above 12,000 ft.

He said he would look into the requirement for a satellite-based communication system at the border posts.

Mr. Patil said the Government had already cleared a project through which ITBP border outposts would be connected by road by 2012.

The Government has allocated Rs.1,400 crore for the project. He also asked the senior ITBP officers to speed up the raising of 20 new battalions. Earlier, ITBP Director-General V. K. Joshi apprised the Home Minister of the challenges faced by the force, which mans 3,488 km of the India-China border.
