150 MBBS students’ fate hangs in balance

Notice issued to Indore college for showing ‘extraordinary haste’ in completing the admissions in a single day

As per norms, admissions can be done only on the basis of merit in DEMAT/PMT and counselling

Guidelines were flouted and students were admitted even on the basis of Class 12th marks

Bhopal: Uncertainty looms over the future of 150 MBBS students of a new private medical college at Indore, after the State Fees and Admission Committee issued notice to the college for showing ‘extraordinary haste’ in completing the admission process in a single day.

Indore-based Index Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (IMCHRC) had obtained permission for starting the MBBS course on September 29 this year and completed the entire formality of admitting 150 students within 24 hours, raising eyebrows among the educationists.

As per the norms, admissions to the course can be done only on the basis of merit in DEMAT/PMT (Dental and Medical Admission Test and Pre-medical Test) and counselling.

Some of the disgruntled aspirants had alleged that the guidelines were flouted by the college authorities during the admission process and student were admitted even on the basis of marks obtained in the 12th board examination.

Following complaints in this regard, the Fee and Admission Committee headed by P.L. Chaturvedi has issued notice to the college authorities and demanded explanation, the committee sources said.

The committee has asked the college authorities to seek extension of time from the Centre government for ensuring transparency in the admission process.

The committee will meet on Thursday and will put the matter before its members to decide further course of action after considering the reply sent by the college authorities in this regard.

Meanwhile, the college management said that they have followed all the procedures while admitting the students.

Besides admitting students through their DEMAT and PMT merit, the college had also admitted students having 50 per cent or above marks in the 12th board examination, the IMCHRC management said.

The college confirmed that they got the necessary permission from the Centre on September 29.

On the same day and the following one, notices were issued in newspapers for organising counselling for admission and completed the process on the same day as it was the last date.

Moreover, since all the seats were not filled through counselling, the college decided to admit students with 50 per cent or above marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology, they said.

The committee sources said that as per the rules and regulations the college cannot admit the students on the basis of marks obtained in 12th standard but only on the basis of DEMAT\PMT merit and counselling. -- PTI
