Gushing out: Surplus water being released from the Krishnagiri Reservoir Project at Periyamuthur, near Krishnagiri, on Thursday.

Krishnagiri: Water level in some of the major reservoirs in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts has risen thanks to the torrential rain that lashed the water-starved districts for the past few days. The early onset of the northeast monsoon has brought good rain in catchment areas and copious inflow into various reservoirs.

Brimming

According to official sources, out of the total 174 Public Works Department tanks in the districts, about 17 tanks have attained 70 per cent of the total capacity with the remaining having 50 per cent of the storage capacity. Thally, Barur and Bengondapuram tanks are brimming.

Similarly, about 1,406 panchayat union tanks in Krishnagiri, Pocchampalli, Uthangkarai, Denkanikottai and Hosur taluks have started receiving water in abundance, which has led to recharging of bore wells and augmentation of ground water level.

The ensuing rain may fill up more than 60 per cent of the irrigation tanks and anaicuts in the district.

The storage level in the Krishnagiri Reservoir Project has touched 50.05 feet as against the full reservoir level of 52 feet.

The storage level in the other major reservoirs is as follows: Kelavarapalli - 39 feet, Vaaniyar - 49 feet, Thoppiar - 37 feet.

Precautionary measure

PWD sources pointed out that as a precautionary measure adequate sand bags had been placed at all major tanks and water bodies in the district to prevent breaching.

People could contact the 24-hour flood control room through number 1077 (toll free) for information and assistance.

The average rainfall recorded till October is 671.86 mm as against the normal rainfall of 830.5 mm. About 102.7 mm was received till September. With the season being favorable the district may receive more than the average rainfall of 291.1 mm during the northeast monsoon. The average rainfall received during 2006 is 203.5 mm.

Rainfall

The average rainfall recorded in Krishnagiri district in the past 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Thursday is as follows (in mm): Nedungal 14, Uthangarai 10, Anchetti 14, Hosur 8, Krishnagiri 4.2, Denkanikottai 4, Rayakottai 3 mm.
