HANDBOOK: Perambalur Collector Anil Meshram (left) handing over a guide on agricultural schemes to State secretary of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam R. Raja Chidambaram at Ariyalur on Thursday. ARIYALUR: Inadequate rainfall, coupled with unusually hot conditions prevailing in the last two months, has caused severe damage to three major crops in 61,910 hectares in dry land belts of the district. The administration has sent a report to the State government recommending payment of adequate compensation to the affected farmers. Stating this at the farmers’ grievances day meeting here on Thursday, Collector Anil Meshram said a total of 44,276 hectares in maize, 9,344 hectares in groundnut and 8,290 hectares in paddy were totally damaged. The Agriculture Department conducted a survey of the damage. A detailed report was sent to the government, recommending adequate compensation under the ‘Natural Calamity Fund’ scheme. District secretary of the CPI-led Tamizhnadu Vivasayigal Sangam A. Venugopal and State secretary of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam R. Raja Chidambaram said even the current spell of rain would not do any good to the crops that were “dead.” When secretary of the Sugarcane Growers Welfare Association Muruganandam referred to the delay in payment by a private sugar mill, an executive from the factory said steps would be taken to disburse the dues immediately. An official from the Public Sector Sugar Mills in Eraiyur said the crushing season would not be delayed. It would start by the middle of December. District Revenue Officer B. Shankar said the Centrally-sponsored National Agriculture Development Programme would be implemented in the district to increase the GDP. Earlier, the Collector released a guide on the subsidy-based schemes being implemented in the district. The first copy of the guide was received by Mr. Raja Chidambaram.
