Chennai: Wards that follow best practices in solid waste management will be recognised with annual awards jointly instituted by the Chennai Corporation and Exnora International, Mayor M. Subramanian said here on Wednesday. “One ward in each zone will be chosen for the award. The municipal councillor and conservancy inspector of the ward will be honoured,” he said at the inauguration of a workshop on solid waste management. The training programme was conducted by Exnora International for Corporation conservancy inspectors and supervisors. Mr. Subramanian said that segregation of waste at source would pave the way for composting of kitchen waste and recycling of plastic, paper and metal. Conservancy inspectors have been given a hand-held microphone for making announcements and conducting awareness campaigns on source segregation, he said. Exnora Founder M.B. Nirmal said waste was a resource waiting to be tapped. Homes that composted kitchen waste could generate organic manure for plants, he said. The “reuse, reduce and recycle” method would help to bring down the amount of garbage generated and, subsequently, cut the emission of greenhouse gases such as methane from landfills, Mr. Nirmal said.
