Construction workers demand bonus

Special Correspondent

PUDUCHERRY: Rallying under the banner of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), construction workers staged a demonstration before the Labour Department Complex on Thursday to highlight demands such as immediate disbursement of Rs. 1,500 as Deepavali bonus.

They also called for steps to provide statutory powers to the construction workers welfare board in the Union Territory.

Secretary of the Puducherry unit of the AITUC V.S.Abishekam said that the government should emulate Tamil Nadu by remitting the subscription fee of Rs.100 on behalf of the workers. As the welfare board was not conferred with statutory powers, it became difficult for the organisation to function independently, he said. Certain decisions taken by the board could not be implemented without delay as they had to be sent to the departments concerned for clearance, he said.
